Adidas Launching New Star Wars-Themed World Cup Spot Saturday
Adidas has "hijacked the cantina scene from the original 1977 Star Wars for its lavish World Cup advertisement," splicing stars including Galaxy MF David Beckham, musician Noel Gallagher and a "light saber-wielding Snoop Dogg into footage featuring Han Solo and Obi-Wan Kenobi," according to Mark Sweney of the GUARDIAN.
The commercial, via Sid Lee, Amsterdam, "will launch on TV during" Saturday's U.S.-England match on ITV1. The ad promotes the Adidas Originals brand and is "being seeded online ahead of its TV debut."
Adidas "had to seek permission from George Lucas's Lucasfilm for the rights to re-edit the Mos Eisley Cantina scene."

that was the dumbest commercial ive ever seen. i was completely confused almost all the way through. if people like star wars then sure its a good ocmmercial but since i dont lioke star wars i dont like it. i didnt see anything that had to do with the world cup. i saw david beckham and that was the only thing i saw that had to do with snoop dogg.
ReplyDeletei think there doing a fine job of marketing because i see alot of commmercials and ive seen enough of them to know the dates of when it starts and when it ends.if they keep up doing what theyre doing then they should have a good amount of non soccer fans watching aswell. i thnk they have plenty of people that play soccer watching already annd they will tell theyre friends that dont necessarily play soccer to watch it aswell.

I thought that this video was very interesting. It was in a bar mixed with Snoop, other soccer players (sporting Addias) and Star Wars characters all talking to each other and then randomly fighting with each other. The overall marketing efforts were discrete but when coming away from the video one will remember what they saw easily because it was unique and the addidas logos stood out. Also, many soccer players will easily be recognized and it will help promote the World Cup.
ReplyDeleteI think that they are doing a good job of marketing the World Cup, although I am not as familiar with the soccer world as other people are, from all the hype I hear they must be doing something right. I think they could expand a bit more, to reach out to even more people who may not necesarily see all their promotions, then they would thrive.
the commercial was kind of confusing to why it would relate to the world cup.i dont the commercial was all that great it looked dumb to me. i dont think that if people waTCH THE VIDEO THAT THEY WOULD KNOW HOW IT RELATES TO THE WORLD CUP.i really didnt notice that people were wearing addidas clothing until the end of the video.
ReplyDeletei dont think they are marketing themselves to well because not a lot of people pay attention to the world cup except for the people who are soccer fans. i think that they need to put the world cup on a channel that everybody watches. plus the world cup is not even that important to the world.

This marketing tactic is pretty interesting and unique but it left me a bit confused as to what the soccer players actually had to do with star wars. It catches people's attention though especially because of the soccer players in the commercial. It markets not only the players but the bran adidas because they are wearing their apparel. It shows a creative side to both the world cup and adidas.
ReplyDeleteThis commercials does market the players in the world cup but I find it hard for it to specially market the world cup. Since it's a unique kind of commercial it'll attract mostly other crowds into watching the world cup. People such as video gamers and movie watchers are most likely to find interest as well as current soccer fans. I think the world cup is doing a good job marketing but I find this commercial a bit weird and awkward because I can't really find the point to it. But I think this shows an effort of the world cup to reach out to different viewers and audiences.

I love this video. I'm personally a pretty big star wars fan, so this video appeals a lot to me. It was really funny too. It doesn't seem to help the world cup a whole lot outside of using a few soccer players. It will help the world cup just because of theamount of people who will watch it for StarWars. Adidas will get some benefits but really not much morethan any other commercial.
ReplyDeleteI think the world cup is doing a very good job of marketing. I've seen a lot of tv commercials for it and ads in magaziones. The commercials they have been showing have been pretty good commercials too. ESPN especially has been having a lot of World Cup commercials. They are definetly reaching their target market through ESPN.
I thought the video was pretty stupid. I looked at it in disgust, it was the dumbest video ever.Not good advertising at all..smh. It doesn't support marketing for the World Cup at all. I feel as if it would turn people away because that commercial was so weak.

I didnt really enjoy this video it didnt really have anything to do with soccer. It was pointless and random it only had one soccer player and had rap artist Snoop dogg in it slaying people with his life savers. No it didnt have anything to do with the fifa world cup.
ReplyDeleteI think the other video we watched was an amazing video that video was all about soccer and it had people that didnt even like soccer that much watching it.
The commercial could have been alot better i think. It was funny but more players should have been added in and it was pretty confusing to me. A commercial should market those who even dont know anything about soccer, its too confusing. David Beckham wasnt a good choice because he isnt that marketable. I did see the beckham and snoop wearing adidas shoes and track jacket. It would have been funnier if they had someone like Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldinho should have been in there because he looks like one of the characters in Star Wars.
ReplyDeleteThe theme was funny, i wonder what they have in store next. There were soccer posters on the walls but they couldve had more stuff to market the world cup. I dont get why Snoop dogg was in the commercial though. If they wanted to market adidas they can put Run DMC because hes marketable and hes known already for also having his show on MTV.

i dont think it was a good commercial. i dont see how it relates to soccer or portrays the message the company is trying to get across. I dont think that commercial shows how big the event is. I also dont see how it markets adidas as a leader over its competition. I think that it is original but it doesnt do the world cup justice.
ReplyDeletei think that overall they are doing a good job of marketing the world cup. when i am watching tv i see a lot of commercials about the event that is so popular around the world. i believe that they are attracting many soccer fans around the globe to watch this major event. i believe tha they should not only focus on soccer fans though because there may be a good number of people that are interested but just need that one reason to watch. i think the commercials now are mainly aimed towards soccer fans.
The video was not that great. They should've had more known players. They did a good job marketing because it showed celebrities and a player like Snoop Dawg and David Beckham. The commercial does support it because it shows Adidas and Adidas is a very known brand in the World Cup.

My favorite commericial was Write The Future with all the players like Wayne Rooney, Christiano Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho. That was great and it was nice how they showed it.
I do not like this commercial at all. It had nothing to do with the World Cup. Just showing people involved does'nt associate it with the tournament. There was one soccer reference involving a trade of David Beckham, who is not good anymore, that had nothing to do with the World Cup. There are no trades for the World Cup, obviously, because every player plays for their respective countries. This commercial is a waste of money and time.
ReplyDeleteThe World Cup has done a good job marketing itself until now. I am very dissapointed with Adidas and the World Cup for allowing this to be presented during a game. Especially a U.S. game because im again; obviously biased. The Nike commercial was awesome. It raised the standards for World Cup commercials. I expected a lot more 2010 South Africa World Cup references and atleast one soccer reference that involved the World Cup, and not just a random soccer topic. I expected a lot better...

in my oponion that video was kinda dumb. i dint expect for addidas to make that type of commercial becouse i think that addidas should make an explosive commercial. this commercial dint really attract me to the shoes or watch one of their other videos. the video dint eally had to do anything with the world cup becouse the only thing that attracted my eyes was the addidas shirt and not the shoes.

I think the video was very entertaining. I'm not entirely sure how it promotes the world cup other than the presence of a few soccer players. I do think it is a good commercial for Addidas as a company because it promotes their new Star Wars collection that is going to be released. If this commericals intention was to promote the World Cup then they failed, but I still liked the commercial, Snoop Dogg is a straight up thug haha.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a couple of commericals for the World Cup, but not a whole lot. I think they could be doing more to advertise it, because I know it's not in my mind, so I'm not goin to tune into it. Soccer is dumb...
This commercial was very bad and unrelated. It didn't have anything to with the World Cup or even soccer in general. Even Adidas wasn't really represented in this ad. Also, it ripped off one of the more historic movie scenes and was really lame. I think Star Wars should've checked the commercial before letting them take the copyright.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I feel like the World Cup is represented well. The 3 minute ad which featured all the soccer phenoms and their effect on the world by Nike is good. However, Adidas did not have the success as Nike. I feel like this goes beyond the promotion for the World Cup, but only fuels the feud between Nike and Adidas.
this was a dumb commercial. I think it will confuse more people than get them interested. Star Wars in no way ties in with the world cup. I didnt see the connection they were trying to make. It did get adidas brand out there though which is what they were aiming for i guess.
ReplyDeleteThe world cup is doing a phenomenal job of advertising. It is everywhere you look. They are in print ads, all over sports illustrated and espn. Nike had a spectacular commercial that really promoted the world cup as well. I might actually watch this year, they made it seem appealing.

I think that the video is very good and funny I think that the marketing for the world cup is great because companies are making great videos for their product for the world cup. I think that Adidas made a good video and i think that when people watch the video they will like it and they will laugh. Also i think that Adidas will make a lot of money from the commercial because they are using a lot of famous people and people will recognize them and think about Adidas product and might go out to buy some.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion they are not great at advertising the world cup, but instead individual products that will be in the world cup. I also think that they should have more advertising for the world cup instead of individual products only. For example i probably will not watch the world cup because it is not appealing to me with the advertising that they have done. If it were up to me i would have more commercials on the world cup, so that there could be more viewers and potentially more customers that come to the games.
This commercial was sort of odd and definitely unique. But I think the fact that it is odd makes it stand out and people will be interested in figuring out the commerical. But at the same time it being odd could make adidas look bad because people will be thinking "what the heck was that." This commercial benefits adidas and the players because it ties both in to the commercial in a unique way.

It definitely brings not only america, but other countries closer to the games so that they tune in. Even though this commercial was a little odd, it still advertises the world cup either way.
