Adidas Launching New Star Wars-Themed World Cup Spot Saturday
Adidas has "hijacked the cantina scene from the original 1977 Star Wars for its lavish World Cup advertisement," splicing stars including Galaxy MF David Beckham, musician Noel Gallagher and a "light saber-wielding Snoop Dogg into footage featuring Han Solo and Obi-Wan Kenobi," according to Mark Sweney of the GUARDIAN.
The commercial, via Sid Lee, Amsterdam, "will launch on TV during" Saturday's U.S.-England match on ITV1. The ad promotes the Adidas Originals brand and is "being seeded online ahead of its TV debut." Adidas "had to seek permission from George Lucas's Lucasfilm for the rights to re-edit the Mos Eisley Cantina scene."

I thought the video was really weird. I didn’t quite understand the correlation with the World Cup and Star Wars. Honestly it kind of creeped me out. It supports the World Cup because of the subliminal messages throughout and the players that are involved. What I didn’t really understand though is why Snoop Dogg was in it. Clearly he doesn’t play soccer and I highly doubt he watches it.
ReplyDeleteOther than this commercial/marketing effort, I think that the MLS has done a really good job at marketing for the World Cup. I think that although not many people tune in regularly, they are making it seem appealing to many different groups of people. This is where the Star Wars commercial comes into play. The commercial serves as a marketing effort to grasp those viewers who normally don’t watch.
i dont see how the commercial is advertising addidas and the world cup, there are very few things in the ad that support the world cup. for as long as the commercial is it could be a lot more powerful of a commercial, its just too long. and star wars with the world cup? and than throw in snoop dog? very random.
ReplyDeletei have seen a few otherr world cup commercials. there shorter and i belive much better than this one.

When i saw this video, and it pertains to the world cup. I think it is giving e message on different countries with the different races. I think this video was good for it because their a lot of star wars. I think it is a good idea for the world cup for more fan base.
ReplyDeleteIts also making the world cup make more money for the fan base. They are doing a good job because star wars attracts so many fans. They also explained a little bit how the tournament when in a funny way. Everybody loves star wars
The video was boring and I didn't know that this video was supposed to related to the world cup until I saw the question. They should of put soccer players in this video. They shouldn't put Snoop Big G up in there, he is not a soccer player. The only thing that was good was that the actors wore Adidas clothing to represent Adidas.
ReplyDeleteI think that the people who are working on the world cup are doing a great job marketing for this world cup. There marketing strategies made me want to watch the world cup. But this video needs to be deleted because if they put this on national television, a lot of people will not want to watch the world cup anymore.

I enjoyed the commercials abstract approach in the Star Wars setting. I found the commercial to be enjoyable and amusing. Snoop Dogg gave the commercial an added appeal that is irreplaceable. These two features combined give the commercial an attractive aura that makes you inclined to want to see the commercial over and over. The fact that everyone in the commercial is wearing adidas apparel will help adidas to market their new products.
ReplyDeleteI feel the World Cup is not doing as much as it should be in order to market their current product. I have seen very few commercials for the World Cup this past year. I’ve also heard very little about this year’s World Cup which is an indication of bad marketing because it is such a popular sports event. I personally feel they are not utilizing the media properly. They need to increase their commercial numbers and value.
My overall opinion of the video is that it was really weird. I didnt like it. I didnt understand why they chose a Star Wars theme. I dont think it was a good advertisement. It doesent seem to really support the world cup.
ReplyDeleteThis years efforts to market the world cup are really good, I think. They seem to keep making really good commercials and great marketing schemes. They appeal to more than just soccer fans with their advertisements. I look forward to watching it.

The advertisement with the star wars theme is effective because it relates to more to wide target market. The video was interesting because it had star wars characters and a number of famous celebrities. I liked how it had snoop dogg was in the commercial using his light saver and cut off the guys arm. I like how Indiana Jones was in there telling the star wars people to use his ship. It also had David Beckham which relates to the soccer player because he’s one of the major stars of the soccer world.
ReplyDeleteThe overall marketing efforts of the world cup are effective I think because everyone in the world has the chance to watch the games. With everyone watching the cup they have to market to a wide range of people. Even people who don’t watch soccer normally watch the world cup because its every four years and shows who is the best team in the world. The world cup has to market to every person so the advertisement they are making are effective.
