Crons Enters Nutrition Space

Upstart apparel brands don't usually see sports nutrition as a natural brand extension.

Unless you're Pat Cavanaugh, that is.

The former Pitt point guard who is chief executive of Crons, a team apparel manufacturer, has a brother who is an executive at GNC and a mother who is a nutritionist.

And while the company's core business of making uniforms will remain its bread and butter, Cavanaugh says that he thinks his protein bar business could be a $1 million business in 2011 —a bold prediction for a company that did roughly $2 million in sales last year.

  1. Cron is taking a chance in a big business field, but you have to take chances to suceed any where so he has to do this if he wants to be successful in a large market. I think it is an uphill battle but if he can get one large organization to support the bars they will be more successful. Power Bar has such a long history in the business and they have developed a reputation as a leader in the industry. If they are able to attract a person that could sponsor them it would be easier for the Come Ready Bars.

    I think Power Bar does the best job marketing itself. People even refer to nutrition bars as protein bars or power bars. Virtually any store carries the products and it is rare that you see a television advertisment for them but people still know what it is. You dont have to go to a GNC to buy them either. 711 carries them. Personally I dont think that any other bar comes close.

  2. I dont think that Cron has a chance in heck to become sucessful. Becauce they arent out their. What i mean by that is nobody knows them. I dont think the have the edge on power bar at all. If anything power bar has the edge on Cron's bar.

    I think a good nutrition bar is those Fiber one + bars. First they taste really good becasue its like chocolate chunks and think oats and then chocolate drizzled over the bar. Its like having dessert all over again. Secoandly is very healthy and evryone loves something thats good and tastes healthy. I think they do so well because their product is just amazing, meaning their product is true it actually tastes good.

  3. I Honestly dont believe that this protein bar will be sucessful through the upcoming years. There are already many many protein drinks and bars on the market. They also are coming into the market when the economy is at a bad place. They might have an edge over companies like Power Bar because they have other branches other than just protein bars.

    I personally do not eat protein bars. Although the one that i have seen the most throughout stores is Power Bar. They seem to be at every major market place. I think they do so well because they have been around so long and everyone knows their name. I think the muscle milk protein bar is the next product that will make it big. They do an excellent job marketing themselves.

  4. there are alot of differnt brands and types of nutrtion bars. i think come ready is going to have a hard time starting off. there are many other larger brand like power bar that will dominate the nutrtion bar industry. if come ready is marketed correctly it has a chance, but a slim chance for it to be a huge hit.
    power bar is the best marketed, i see commercials and ads for the nutrtion bar quite alot. there are internet ads. i think the reason why there doing good is just because there marketed alot more than the others

  5. I think Pat C. has a good chance of making a marketable product. Come Ready Bars will be effective and marketable because Pat set out a specific target market. He is only aiming to sell it to high school athletes and college athletes. His goal is to create a bar in high protein but sell it as if it was a low protein bar. Good quality with a low price does not come cheap these days but Pat C. is trying to change that.
    I think that in order to become successful one must be experienced in the field of nutrition or sports. Knowledge should come first hand from experience because i believe that scientist nutritionist that never played sports should not be making bars for athletes. Pat has experience from his brother and mother and that will help him become successfull.

  6. As far as Cron is considered, their chances at being successful in the engery bar campaign is very slim. Cron is famous, but not even that famous when it comes to its apparels. The fact their taking a chance with this performance bar is bold and gutsy nonetheless, but their going to advertise a lot to get anywhere with the product. Along with that let alone start competing with name brands. The only reason it could potentially have an edge would be because it’s a pre performance bar, and it’s a solid rather than all the liquids athletes consume such as Gatorade.

    I think NutriBars do the best job by far because it targets athletes and the common people. Its nutritional and so athletes consume it, and its healthy and so the average consumer takes it in as well. The various tastes comes in both fruit and yogurt, so they have a wide range of edible bars which is why I think it does so well in the marketing game. Other brands that are slowly rising would be the Lunabars or the SoyJoys because they are supposedly organic. Other than that athletic bars are always in the game, but I think NutriBars do the best.

  7. Honestly I feel like there isn’t a whole lot of hope for the crons nutrition bar. There have been so many advancements in this market that the addition of a new brand all together wont make much of a difference. I think that in order for a brand to just now start out, it would be hard for it to actually make it. Every sports bar says they have a leg up on their competition but at the end of the day there is usually not much of a difference. Although they may say that there is much difference, the odds of everyone believing that, is very slim.
    I feel as though the protein bar that does the best job of marketing itself is power bar. I think this because for the most part it was one of the first on the market. Not to mention that, its name gets right to the point of what it is and what its purpose is. I think one that is gaining ground is probably fiber one bars. You can find them in almost any store, including robeks and starbucks. Of course, Luna bars on the rise too.

  8. In my opinion I think that the Cron bar will do well in the sports protein bar market. There are a lot of different kinds but they are marketing to a specific group of people so that will help them sell more. They seem to have an edge because they are an already known brand in the high school/college world for their uniforms, but now that they are coming up with a healthier sports bar so that they can make more money. I think that Cron has a good chance of doing well in the market. They think that Nutragrain bar does the best job marketing itself because everyone knows who they are and what they do. They have been around a long time and people know who they are. People have been eating them for a while because they are so healthy. They do well because they are delicious and have been around for a while. I haven’t heard of any other sports nutrition bars.

  9. In my opinion, I agree with the article that states that Cron’s chances of being successful with the Come Ready Performance Protein Bars are not very high. If I was the business owner I would focus solely on making uniforms since that is what generates the most money. It may be too much of a risk to start competing with larger companies since they have established a solid place in the business already. Since a lot of people are more familiar with these common brands it will be even harder for Cron’s to summit to the top of the nutritional bar pyramid. But, I do think that they seem to have an edge on the other companies like Power Bar because it is cheaper and healthier. Since money is everything that is what’s going to help them the most.

    The nutrition bar that I feel does the best job of marketing itself would be NutriGrain Bar. This company is not only affordable, but this line has so many different variations that can appeal to many different tastes. NutriGrain Bars do a great job of marketing because they have many ads in magazines as well as commercials that show on a regular basis on the television. Another nutrition bar that I think has been gaining ground over the past couple of years is the Luna Bars Company. Like, NutriGrain Bar they have a variety of flavors that many people are attracted to. Although they do not have commercials on television, they have ads in magazines. In grocery stores, they are on the top of the shelves and visibly seen when you walk past the nutrition bar aisle in the store. All in all, I think these two nutrition bars have been very successful.

  10. I think that Cron's chances of selling the bar is in the middle. The fact that he isn't just a brand new company halps selling the bar because high schools and colleges buy uniforms from this company. I do however think that adding on to their company as an incentive to the uniform. That is the only really I think they have a good chance. Also, the fact that the bar is cheaper and has new flavors most dont sell.

    The most popular power bar would have to be Power Bar. They have so many products and have been around for a while. The products they sell range from bars, gels, drinks, and protein bars. They are continuing on the rise because they keep making new products. Products on the rise I think are the healthier organic bars. People want them more because they are fresher.

  11. I feel Cron's chances of being successful with the Come Ready Performance Protein Bars are pretty good because the power bar is a very popular business now of days. They seem to have an edge on other companies like Power Bar because it’s marketed to the younger athletes which need to eat healthier because their young. The coach’s support the bar because most athletes when wanting a snack eat junk food and the power bar will change will change that. The bar is cheap so it can compete with other protein bars.
    The nutrition bar that I feel does the best job of marketing itself is the power bar. What they Do you feel do so well is market their product to show how healthy and good for you it is. Any other bars that have been gaining ground and are on the rise the muscle bars. More people who are trying to get stronger and build muscle mass eat these bars. The nutrition is becoming more popular every year and is the way to go if looking for a healthy snack.

  12. It is a good thing that Cron is taking a chance because some business requires chances. If they can a bigger corporation to support the bar then they would be good. Power has come a long way in the industry and is now their main product. If they can get a sponser for the bar, it would be a much easier business.


    The power bar sells on its on. People use this bar as a protein bar to gain muscle. Even though they don't promote it that well people still know what it is. You don't have to go to a special store to get them because places like 7-11 sells them. I like the bar and no other bar can do it better.

  13. Cron has a chance of being successful with the Come Ready Performance Protein Bars. It states in the article, "Crons Come Ready Performance Protein Bars will be marketed directly to the same high school and college market the company makes uniforms for." There are a lot of protein bars that are successful. Cron needs sponsors so they can help the protein bar be successful.
    I really don't know much about protein bars and I don't eat protein bars on a regular basis. But I heard of power bars and all that good stuff. And I also heard that they taste very good. They do an excellent job marketing themselves.

  14. i fail to see a positive outcome from cron making protein bars. I feel that they are an unknown brand and making protein bars will make them no more known than they already are. I also feel that more popular brands will dominate them in this category. In order for them to be successful they'll need to make excellent marketing efforts. These efforts will need to be far stronger than their uniform marketing.

    Personally i see no purpose in any brand getting into the protein bar industry. I find protein bars to be disgusting. I feel that their are better, more appealing ways to gain dietary supplements. A more productive idea for the protein category would be protein shakes. A possible collabo with robeks may do the trick!
