Bad Play, Free Ticket Is Marketing Ploy Of Future
by Darren Rovel, CNBC Sports Reporter
After a bad loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Seattle Sounders said they’d refund their season ticket holders for the game because of how poorly the team played.
The idea reportedly came from a player, Steve Zakuani, who said that the fans shouldn’t have to pay. Remarkably, the Sounders soon announced that the game would in fact be refunded to the team’s 32,000 season ticket holders.

I think this type of guarantee is okay to work with because the team feels that their fans should not pay to see them play. If they do not mind free games, then it should not matter if ticket holders pay or not. Because they play so poorly, they are understanding to the fact that their fans may be disappointed and would rather not pay. Not making them pay for tickets will still allow fan support to attend the games. At the same time they are losing out on any sales they may be able to get.
ReplyDeleteIf I were the owner of a sports franchise, I probably would support an idea like this but with certain regulations. I think this policy would work best with a sport such as ping pong. It is not very popular to much people or fans and not many people attend these type of games. The games are very small and are not a part of a large industry. Since they probably don’t get as much speculators as other sports, they may not mind giving away free tickets to people that may want to watch them play.

i would support the idea of steve becouse fan are the one who should satisfaction of the game and if there not getting it then the best thing to do is get a refun on what they pay for to watch. the team that play poorly is the one whos the most responsible for their action on playing so bad and not kepping their fans happy. refuning the tickets would be a good idea for the team to do.
ReplyDeletethe sport that i think the polocy should used for is football becous its one of the main sports americans watch and participate at. itbs good to give refuns becouse fans would have more confidence on buying the seson tickets. what i think is that if you watch 2 games in a row and you dont like it you can get a refun but if your keep watching the games then you cant.
I feel that it would be a good idea. This is becuase the season ticket holders will most likely buy season tickets next year. If the get some money back to that they are more likely to stay with the team. But you can also say that its a bad idea becuase next time the team plays bad the fans are going to ask for there money back.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of giving the money back will work best. The idea of fans getting there money back after a bad played game but their team will have a great postiving increase to the event. Then agian you have to think about what happens next time the team plays as bad as they did. Will you give fans there money back ? If not the fans will feel that they got cheated.
This idea is cute and i guess you can call it effective. Giving money back to the fans who watch their team stink in a game is a marketing ploy for what? I almost feel like this is a cop out for a sorry team in desperate need in a desperate time. How is giving them credit to another game going to give your team revenue and especially raise revenue at the snack bar? This plan is alright if you ask a fan but it doesnt help the team or organization.
ReplyDeleteFor example, if a player sucks one night does he have to give money out of his contract back to the team? The answer is no, there is no guarantee's in the sports industry, so giving credit back is not a guarantee. This would work well with baseball if you had to choose, because they play 162 games, and one game isn't going to affect the franchise.

i do not think that this type of garentee is a good thing. I think that as a professional player you should always play your hardest and want to win, this is what you are getting paid for. i do not think that the owner of a team should have to make a guarentee that you will play hard and that the game will be good, it should already be that way. if i was the owner of a sports franchise i would definitly not make this deal. i would tell the players that if it is not a good game because they do not play their hardest then they will not play for me. i would not punish the team however, if they do play their hardest and they still end up losing.
ReplyDeleteI think that this kind of insurance would work best with a baseball team. i think so because a lot of times games are won off of errors not just because the other team i better than them. in football, teams can win or get blown out only because they have so many amazing players, in baseball it is up to one man at a time to make or break the game. if he messes up then it could cost them the game. i think that this kind of insurance policy will help make the players better and not make so many errors because they wont want to lose money.
My thoughts on this type of guarantee are good that they are giving a refund the fans due to the poorly played game.It is important to give a refund especially to the fans because it is important to give them what the fans truly deserve. If I was an owner of a sports franchise I would support this type of guarantee depending on the situation of how bad games are played, etc.
ReplyDeleteI think this policy would work best with baseball. The policy would work so well with baseball because of how not many people go and watch a baseball game.Though it is important to give a refund to fans, it makes the fans want to come back to another baseball game. Since baseball is not so popular they might not mind giving away free tickets to a ball game.
My general thoughts on this type of guarantee is that i think what they are doing is good and bad. I think it is good because the fans who didnt enjoy the game because the team played so poorly get their money back. I also think it is bad because teams arent always going to play good, so their would be no reason to refund the fans tickets because that is just takin the money you could have earned away. If I were the owner of a sports franchise, I would support an ideas like this because of the team perfprmance. The team dissapointed the fans so i really would support and idea like this.
ReplyDeleteThe sport I think this policy would work best with would be basketball. I think this policy would work best with basketball because if the team gets blown out by 40 or 50 in their own arena it will be very embarrasing and the fans would want their money back because of the team performance and lack of effort.

I think this is a good idea in a way but I would never do it. This is because a game is unpredictable and you never know who is going win. Either way fans are going to watch what happens no matter the outcome because of the fun nature of the game. You're are paying to watch a game that can go either way, you're not exactly paying to have them win, someone has to win and someone has to lose.
ReplyDeleteWhen the team that is playing poorly it could lose fans, so a way to keep them happy would be to purchase their tickets for them. But buying tickets can’t go on forever, they are going to need to make their money somehow. If the team or organization is trying to sell out a game then this is a brilliant idea. The bottom line is that the organization and the players are responsible for keeping their fans happy. Refunding the tickets would be a good idea for the team to do, as long as they end up making money in the long run.

In my perspective, this is a good business idea that will benefit everybody, the fans, players, sponsors and the team. Refunding tickets for a poor game and substituting it with credit for another game is just a good deal for fans and a profitable business for the team. The team’s concession prices will definitely increase and they won’t have to worry about the attendance of the next game due to the idea of refunding tickets. I fully consider this as a likewise thought that has many positive aspects, if I were a team manager. The reason behind my support is the motivation of players. When the team refunds the ticket, the players clearly know what the fans expect the next time they attend the event.
ReplyDeleteBusiness is business. This thought applies to all sports; it’s all about attendance, concessions and particularly the fans. I think the teams that came up with the idea weren’t because they truly wanted to give the fans a chance to watch them play well, but that may be a reason too. They do it because of the money and profit that will come indirectly to the team and players. This may work efficiently specifically for football and soccer but generally for all sports.
In my opinion, this is a big promise. Not necesarilly for this team, but for what it stands for. At the beginning of he season, season-ticket buyers are taking a risk. Just buying tickets period is a risk. There is no guarantee that they will play well, but thats the chance you take when you buy the tickets.

In my opinion, if it had to go with one sport, i think itd work best with golf. Since its a solo sport, the player may feel more obliged to refund. However, in a team sport, the whole team may not agree.
this is a good ideafor the team but not its season ticket holders. even though they get a discount on next years purchase they still lost this years horrible game. this just makes the team and its owner look selfish for them selves and the 32000fans who paid for the game that was a huge disapoinment. if i were the owner of the team i would be happy beacuase in my eyes it is a good idea but for the fans it looks like i am being selfish for my money lost at that game.
ReplyDeletethsi would work best with probally football becuase when a football team does terrible for one game and then they do the best game of their season the next week it makes up for that one game that the season ticket holders are unhappy about. i think that this would be a good policy for them.
I think this is a horrible idea for buisness as well as for the moral of the team. It is bad enough that these guy cant win a game. They don't need the added presure from the fans that are willing to see them play. Offer them some free apparallel or something but not the tickets. Fans should be there in the bet of times as well as the worst.
ReplyDeleteThe sport to work this idea in is basenball. There 162 games in a season so the organization to give away on game. I still dont think its a good idea because these are professional athletes and should be treated as such. Win Lose or Draw
