Why Market Size Won't Matter for LeBron James' Endorsements
Signing With a Team Like New York Knicks Is Said to Do Nothing to Inflate MVP's Value
CHICAGO (AdAge.com) -- LeBron James may or may not sign with the New York Knicks this summer, but -- contrary to a much-asserted bit of conventional wisdom -- Madison Avenue isn't going to factor in the decision.
"You can make more money playing in New York by far than you can in Cleveland," reads New York magazine's desperate plea for the sought-after free agent's services.

Lebron James is the best basketball player in the league and is a 2 time reigning MVP. It does effect his endorsements if he is on a different team because as a Cav he gets a lot because his team is rather good in the regular season but in the playoffs they cannot finish. If he does sign with the Bulls his endorsements would go up because of Jordan like figure he is to the league. Commercials would come out completely like Jordan vs. Lebron.
ReplyDeleteI feel like that if your a better player or athlete on what you do makes you more marketable because you people like the better player always and that how it has always been. Also if you are a better player, the consumers will pay more attention to you, thats why James is so marketable because he is a 2 time reigning MVP and is so much fun to watch when he scores. James is a unstoppable force in they NBA he just needs a right team, a new team could get him more money and that one championship that James Wants.

I don't think Lebrons endorsement deals will change at all if he changes teams. He is such a dominant and well known player in the NBA that where he is won't matter. No matter where he goes everyone will root for him and he still will have more fans than anyone. Lebron's stardom will precede him no matter where he goes. His fan base just extends too far past his own team than it will matter if he moves.
ReplyDeleteHighly endorsed athletes are generally the ones that are the best in the league. Lebron also had a huge profile because hecame out of highschool directly to the NBA. He also has a very flashy style of play that gets him a lot of time on the highlite reels. I definitly think people pay more attention to products with endorsers in them. I personally like to see the commercials where and entertainer or athlete does something to enhance the product in a commercial.

lebron james is one of the most known basketball players in the nba. He is a multiple time MVP award winner. With his star power it doesnt matter what team he is with. when you hear lebron you think of one of the greatest basketball players. moving teams if anything would increase.
ReplyDeletei think some athletes are more successful endorsers becuase of how known they are. If they have a good reputation they tend to sell more of the products that they are representing. I think that consumers when buying a product, see a big name athlete they are more likely to buy it. People tend to think if its good enough for professional athletes that it is a quality product. People tend to lean towards products that are endorsed like respectable athletes.
i think that he will be a great asset to any team and he might get alot of endorsements but if he plays like he played in the playoffs he might just want to throw in the towel.i think lebron needs to step up his game and stop playing around if he wants to get the gold. i think that if james switched teams and does more and puts in more work then he will get even more endorements.
ReplyDeletei think people who are famous athletes are very marketable by what they do on the feild or the court. the highlights those athletes make in games and the way they play makes people want to be like them.of course people pay alot of attenntion to what endorsements players get like. it makes people want that product.
Lebron James is clearly a very marketable player in the NBA and has plenty of credentials to prove his worth. I do not think his endorsement deals will be affected by any moves around the country, because he is simply that popular. He is also signed with big companies which are known nationwide, such as Nike, McDonalds, State Farm and Coca Cola. So, he will not have any problems with any moves or endorsers.
ReplyDeleteI think endorsements work anyways, but the bigger or more popular the celebrity, the more successful the marketing of the product will go. And, thus, both parties will benefit more. Sure, consumers most likely pay more attention to the products which are endorsed by very popular celebrities, but ultimately, people remember what they like.
In my opinion, Lebron James will have not have any affects for endorsement deals. I think where ever he goes, he will make the same amount of endorsement deals or less. LeBron James is a really good player. He is also very marketable. James will go somewhere else and will not stay in Cleveland.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to endorsements, some players are more marketable than others because they are better. I think the better the player the more deals he/she gets. They do go for sponsors that celebrities are associated with because they are more famous.
I do think that Lebron's plays will effect his endorsements but I don't think it will effect him drastically. If he plays well, he will get more endorsements. If he doesn't play well, he'll just get a little less, if not the same amount of endorsements. If it's an athlete, it usually matters if you win or not. Especially to the audience because if you don't win, your name won't be seen as much, but it mostly depends on the athlete.
ReplyDeleteI think that people mostly look at how an athlete plays, or what an entertainer has to show you. But I also think to be a good person to follow, the person has to have charisma and a good personality that is attractive to the people. I don't think that the people really pay attention to the product but it brings attention to it. It will be associated with the person so it would seem more familiar.

i disagree with this article because i dont think it will effect lebron's endorcements if he leaves clevland. Because he will be the same player and the endorcements didnt sign him because of his team they signed him because of how he plays and his role model attitude.
ReplyDeleteEndorcements is a great way to make alot of money on the side. And it doesnt work for all players because some players get in trouble alot and they will make the company look bad if your a horrible player why would they want to have you endorse their product. And i think people do pay attention to what their favorite athletes repersent.
Lebron James being so well-known will not make a difference of his fan base at all just because of a team switch. His many dedicated fans will remain with him no matter where he plays and so will his endorsement deals. People like Lebron as a player and as who he is not as who he plays for.
ReplyDeleteThe best players in any league will get more attention and endorsements than others that aren't as well known. When customers see a commercial on t.v with a well known player advertising it they come to think "oh wow lebron james really uses that, im gonna use it too". So big name athletes really do help profit companies by endorsing them.
Obviously changing teams is going to affect Lebron James endorsment deals. He is one of the many best basketball players. All i hear is Lebron James when it comes to basketball. Its either him or Kobe. Changing teams will have people checking him out. When a really good athlete changes teams, i usually like to see how he does in the new team. Lebron is going to have fans buy his new jersey.
ReplyDeleteI think people pay attention to transfers because when Shaq moved to heats he got famous. Lebron James will probably make commercials of him on the New York Knicks or any other team. People know he is really good so they are going to buy his new products because they want to keep up with the athelete. If he doesnt do well on the team then he will not be marketable. Its common sence, if one guy is a better athlete than the other than clearly he is going to be more marketable.
ADAMS MIRANDA
I honestly dont think that where Lebron James plays will have an affect on his endorsement. I dont believe that because how can moving to another city miss up the way you play. For an example, moving to Washington D.C. after playing in Clevand it shouldn't affect the way he plays. It might affect the fans and the team he played with but other than that it won't affect anything else.
ReplyDeleteSome athletes & entertainers are more marketable than others because of the way they play, what they sell to their fans, and how good of a player/person they are to other people. I do not feel that consumers pay more attention to the products that players come up with during their seasonaly games.
Anna McMullen
On the team that he plays for in the future will have a major impact on his endorsement deals. If he goes to the Knicks he will be sponsored and endorsed alot. But if he goes to a team like the timberwolves, or some really bad team in a small city he may not become as popular. so lebron should go to a team where he would be the star and have a chance at winning the championship
ReplyDeleteThese dudes are more marketable by t heir behavior on and off the ocurt. these dudes that are endorsed by companies are very very very very very good players. could be the best at their sport. others dont get endorsed as much because they do not perform as well or are not a global player
I think LeBron James is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He will get a lot of endorsements wherever he goes. I do believe he will get more publicity moving to New York because everyone watches transfers and buys and loans to see what teams will improve and what teams will disprove. He will also get new endorsements deals because he has to get a whole new set of Knicks jerseys. He will also get more state limited endorsements to let more people know that he is on the team.
ReplyDeleteEndorsements are a good idea to market an entertainer, and to create more revenue for both benefactors. Some entertainers are more marketable than others because of public appearance. If you the public likes an entertainers qualities then they will like the person. Other entertainers are more marketable because of their skill at what they do, like athletes for example. Michael Jordan is one of the most marketable entertainers of all time. He was the greatest basketball player, and he played baseball so he was introduced into two separate markets. I definitely think that consumers pay more attention to celebrity endorsed products. Some people support some celebrities so much that they will believe whatever they say. Some will also want to be like their favorite celebrity and buy the same products as the celebrity.
Collin Beck
I dont think location matters at all for a player like Lebron James.I dont think it matters where he goes.he could go to the clippers and still make them look good.Nothing will really change his audience because he has been around for so long and his popularity and endorsement deals have almost reached a maximum. where LeBron ends up wont really be a factor. I think that no matter where he is, there will be plenty of endorsement opportunities.
ReplyDeleteSome athletes are more marketable then others because some athletes and entertainers are just better stars then othersThe more you win the more marketable you become and then you become something like a god.some players are more marketable then others because they are a good player and have a good attitude.

An athlete like Lebron James is a walking endorsement. Where ever Lebron James goes there will always be endorsement opportunities for himself as an individual and as a player. Especially if he were to move to a city like New York where the sports and marketing is everything. Lebron James have more endorsement opportunities in New York because it is filled with corporations and headquarters that would love to work with James.
ReplyDeleteEndorsements and athletes are a deadly combination that do attract consumers more than anything. When consumers see an athlete wear products they will assume that its the best product around such as shoes and will be more tempted to buy the product. Athletes get paid tons of money to play sports so why wouldn't they wear the best. Consumers are always more likely to wear or buy products when they are advertised by atheletes and celebrities because they will assume they that its the best brand or style to be wearing. Consumers are not likely to buy products when its just advertise by unknown people or brands.
This summer will be very exciting to see where all the NBA free agents will be headed, the most prominent of which being LeBron James. LeBron has three most likely options, to stay in his homestate Ohio as a Cavalier, take the biggest paycheck available and play in the worlds greatest stage at New York, or team up with Derrick Rose in Chicago and be probable for a championship run. Wherever he ends up, endorsement deals will be surrounding him. Being a Knick will put him in the Big Apple, a marketers dream where bilboards and commercials flow like water. Staying in Cleveland will show him as a loyal and good guy, which could play into endorsement deals. However, I feel like Chicago would be the best place both to advance his playing and monetary career, as championships leads to dynasty, and being called the best player of all time will give LeBron the immortality he deserves.
ReplyDeleteIn order to be successful as a celebrity figure endorser, you must first be successful in whatever your field is. Whether singing, dancing, or playing hockey, you need to reach that star status before really being sought by companies to endorse their products. And what seperates good endorsers from bad ones is character. Peyton Manning is one of the best known figures of this type because hes had an extremely successful career on the field and never gets in trouble off of it. Same in basketball, LeBron has built a very clean image, and would be much better associated with a company than Gilbert Arenas, although they are both all-stars. Consumers definitely pay more attention to products with stars, especially if targeted to the fanbase of that particular figure.

i think that this article is corrent in many ways. the reasond why i agree is that no matter what or where lebron plays he still gonna have the same skills and the same popularity.my opinon is that labron should go with the new york knicks becouse they need a young player like labron an also talent like him. as a young star player like him he has alot of endorsement opportunities becouse he is very talented with his skill and he is know very well on how he's give his 100% on the court.
ReplyDeleteI think that he has labron james has more endorsment opportunities then most of the yound stars out there trying to make it to the top. the resond why they would pick labron insted of the other people is becouse he's one of the most talent player and one of the best out there. if labron make an advertiment or something that intertain the fans he would get more money then the rest that have already made their advertiment. the reason why lebron would get the most of the money he is know and reconize by most of the people that are fans of basketball, most of hes advertisment on tv would be view and most of his merchandize would sold.
In the first place this article does not give enough information about Lebron James. Also i think that where ever he goes it will not affect his endorsement deals. One reason is because companies want someone to endorse their product that is good at what they do. Also companies want someone that is famous and that people like. Lebron James is a good player and i think that people will like him even more now that he is going to a new team.
ReplyDeleteI think that endorsements dont really matter because they are just people. Also most poeple dont care for endorsements because they are annoying, and some people just want the truth about a product. I think that some athletes are more marketable then others because they are better than others because they are better at what they do. Also more people like the team that they are on so they might like the player because of the team. In my opinion, as a customer i think that people dont really care about the endorser because you see them everywhere and it gets annoying at a certain point.

LeBron James is such a great player and athlete it wont matter what market he is in. He already has national and global marketing deals. He also has a great personality that draws marketing deals to him. People love him and he is a phenomal athlete so everyone will buy his products. The market wont matter.
ReplyDeleteEndorsement deals are great. They help out the athlete as well as the business. i think what makes an athlete marketable is their skill and their character. What initially draws people to the athlete is their skill. Their character is what keeps the fan interested in them and sells the product.
Michael Counts
well what they failed to realize in the article, is that cleveland could offer labron way more money than new york could. i dont feel that if lebron moves to new york that he'll be making more money. as the article said, geography doesnt matter in basketball anymore, since 30 years ago. that might be true but i feel that if he moves to a team with better chemistry he can start winning championships, and winning championships is where you make more money.
ReplyDeletei feel that endorsements are very important for a company, its a really great marketing strategy. why some athletes or entertainers are better than others in endorsement deals is because that athlete or entertainer might have more fame, better skill, or popularity. thats important because nobody is going to pay attention to a average athlete or entertainer unless they have a certain liking for that person. i think consumers really do pay attention, if a popular person is doing something or has something, consumers are going to pay for it. thats how it is everybody wants to be like everybody else.

I do not think that it matters where Lebron James has is endorsement deals. No matter where he is he could still be successful. Countries are branched all over the country so I don't think that the location really matters- it just might take a little more work.
ReplyDeleteI think that some celebrities are more marketable than others because they are better athletes and have more fans. When an athlete has more fans, that's better for them. I think that people do pay more attention to companies with celebrities involved because they want to be just like that person and use the same product that they're using.

I dont think LeBron moving to another team will affect his endorsements at all. He is a VERY marketable player and as long as he keeps dominating on the court and he keeps his nose clean off of the court then he will be fine. Who knows maybe he can actually take the Knicks somewhere next year. He might earn even more endorsements from his time with the Cavs.
ReplyDeleteEndorsement deals are great! They help athletes and other celebrities earn more money and they also help the business thats endorsing them. As the athlete/celebrity is endorsed by the business they advertise making more people buy the product/service.
