Why Market Size Won't Matter for LeBron James' Endorsements

Signing With a Team Like New York Knicks Is Said to Do Nothing to Inflate MVP's Value

CHICAGO (AdAge.com) -- LeBron James may or may not sign with the New York Knicks this summer, but -- contrary to a much-asserted bit of conventional wisdom -- Madison Avenue isn't going to factor in the decision.

"You can make more money playing in New York by far than you can in Cleveland," reads New York magazine's desperate plea for the sought-after free agent's services.

  1. No I do not think location matters for LeBron James. He is such a big profile athlete that whereever he goes he will draw marketers and advertising deals. When you are that good it doesnt matter where you play, especially in a popular sport like basketball. Cleveland is not the biggest market in the world but he still pulled major endorsement deals. If he goes to Chicago, Miami, Washington, L.A., or New York he will still make his fair share of money in marketing and basketball.

The more you win the more marketable you are. A good attitude and a clean background always helps too. No one wants to give a convict an endorsement deal. I think if people saw an athlete they like on the television they would pay attention, I would. These little attempts to get the customers attention could go a long way.

  2. I think Lebron James is one the most marketbale stars ever!!! He has some decisions to make, if he stays in cleveand he has a chance at winnning the NBA championship!! But if he goes to the Knicks he will make some serious guap and I mean like lots of $$$$. No I dont think this will affect his endorsement sales. Lebron James is the truth at basketball.

Some sport stars or enetertaines are better at saleing than others. Its all about the hype you get, if your a big star like Lebron, Jeter, Jordan and etc of course your going to do better than some scrub athletes like Big Papi or Dustin Pedrioa. The Red Sox are not a marketing team by the way. Somw great entertainers that are vicious at endorsing stuff is Charlie Sheen and Megan Fox

  3. I agree with the article,I dont think location matters at all for a player like Lebron James. He is a big profile athlete soo wherever he goes he will draw advertising deals. I dont think it matters where he goes. He could go to Minnestoa and still have a big impact. Lebron James is a basketball star and it doesent matter where he goes, he will always be a star.

I like endorsements. I think some athletes get more endorsements because some are just more marketable than others. Attitude has alot to do with it as well. I think people pay alot of attention when a celebrity endorses a product. They will most likely always choose a product endorsed by a celebrity over one that is not.

  4. The article is correct from the aspect they are comning from. How they explained themselves and gave examples to kind of compare to LeBron will make this article a believable source. They are right when they say that nothing will really change his audience because he has been around for so long and his popularity and endorsement deals have almost reached a maximum. I do not think that this will affect LeBron's Career because he is not a new upcoming star and everyone already knows what he is capable of as a team player.
When being endorsed you need to not only be a good player on the field but you also need to have a good heart and personality. You never see players being endorsed to the max when they are involved with drugs, cheating, or something of that sort. That is why some players are more marketable then others because they are a good player and have a good attitude, they are just a people person. I do think people pay more attention to the product and it gives the player a little more attention as well.

  5. I think that where LeBron ends up wont really be a factor. I think that no matter where he is, there will be plenty of endorsement opportunities. When you’re as good of a player as he is, I don’t truly feel that where you play will matter. Maybe the sponsors of the Knicks now aren’t as good as what he is use to but it doesn’t mean that he wont have many opportunities. The problem with the Knicks now, is that they don’t really have a power player like James and because of that, of course their sponsorships aren’t as good.
The more marketable athletes and entertainers are clear. Those people are the ones that are most well known or the best at their trade. I am not the kind of person that really cares about any kind of celebrity endorsers but I know that many people do pay attention to stuff like that. Many people want the same products as the stars have, in hopes of being as good as them. Many people buy products no matter how expensive just because of the celebrity that backs it up.

  6. Lebron james is a athelete known all over. so i dont think it matters where he plays, he will still recieve many endorsement deals. and make lots of money. he will still be a star player on the team, and people will still look up to him.
endorsement are huge. there done alot of times with huge athletes, or celeberties. a good person for a endorsement is someone everyone knows. a football player that sits on the bench and no one has ever heard of is going to fail. but a star like lebron james, michel jordon, where everyo e knows the face and name, is gonna be a good endorsement

  8. After reading the article, it states that no matter where Lebron goes it will not have an effect on his endorsement opportunities. This is due to the fact that many of the big time endorsement deals that Lebron has are stationed throughout the nation which would not benefit in his favor if he would move to New York to play for the Knicks. On top of that, Lebron’s endorsement deals will increase based on his performance as a player, not where he is playing. In my opinion, Lebron is such a global athlete that no matter where he goes Lebron will continue to attract more sponsors and endorsement deals because he is such an exceptional athlete. All in all, I think Lebron doesn’t even have to think about location, because wherever he goes he will benefit financially.
I think certain athletes or entertainers are more marketable than others because they are more personable and relatable than other people. For example, athletes such as Shaquille O’Neal and Lebron James are very marketable are because fans and viewers enjoy their personality and character. As an athlete is more relatable to the public, the more popular they are. I think that consumers do pay attention to products that are associated with celebrity endorsers, especially adolescents. At a young age, kids aspire to be like their role model or a certain athlete which is why companies endorse these big-time athletes. They see the potential and money signs that an athlete can give to a big-time company. Plus, you can see the importance of an athlete as an endorser through the quick response the company has when that athlete or entertainer does something bad which could ruin their image. In the end, I think that companies see having an athlete or entertainer as a necessity for their company to boom.

  9. Lebron James is a excellent athlete. If he goes to a different team he will still be a marketable player. If I was in his shoes, I would pick the New York Knicks to play basketball. But it is up to him. When he picks his team to play for, he will still get endorsement deals.
If you are a great athlete then you will get endorsement deals. Lebron James is an example of a great athlete who gets endorsement deals. Tiger Woods had endorsement deals but with his situation that happened, he lost some of it. I do feel that consumers really pay more attention to products that are associated with a celebrity endorsor. Great athletes get endorsement deals.

  10. As far as endorsements are concerned LeBron James will have his pick, because he is a very profound and well known athlete. Regardless of him leaving Cleveland fame and promise will follow him. If he were to join up with the New York Knicks then it will only better his career and offer him a new take on games. This will be to his benefit and will give marketers a new scheme at working him into slogans and commercials with major corporations offering him products for endorsements. This won’t affect LeBron’s career but just further enhance it.

It depends on the athlete or celebrity when it comes to endorsements and consumer interest.
Athletes are often the most effective in grasping a consumer’s attention because they endorse product fit for themselves. So say if LeBron James wore a certain pair a sneakers when practicing basketball then the average individual would assume that if they wore those shoes then they would be just as good as LeBron James. Of course if Lady Gaga endorsed sneakers it wouldn’t have the same affect because well she is an artist. Consumers pay attention to endorsements based on the endorsement itself. If celebrities endorse clothes or attire they impact the consumers, but if athletes endorse a product I believe they are better listened to and the commercial is better received by the general population.

  11. I think the article is a good artcial because lebron need to pick and hury up and tell us where he is going. But on the other hand its bad because lebron might fell uncomfortable about . he hurrying to make a creer choice. Lebron would also have a huge effect on the whole endorsement area he would keep his old stuff and also I think little company in NYC would give him money tto support him I think its for the better .
Ithink andorsment is great I would love to have that on me. I would be so rich and people would buy my product. But me getting adores is different from someone more famous then me getting like jake carrway he would sell anything his cute like sexy face is on. because he in the MLB he the truth!!! If you were in a store and you see my face or jake face you would most lickly buy jakes product. If your faviort ath face is on something you would mostlickly buy it.

  12. I think that Lebron James is such a big athletes it doesn’t matter where he goes. He will make lots of money wherever he goes. If Mr. James does move to New York it won’t matter because he already makes lots of money and it won’t matter if he’s in Cleveland or in New York. Even though New York is a bigger market, Mr. James income won’t change. He makes a lot from endorsements anyway. It won’t affect his salary wherever he is.
Some athletes are more marketable then others because some athletes and entertainers are just better stars then others. It’s easier to market an athletes or entertainer that is good at what they do then one who isn’t. I do think that people really think that it matter who is endorsing what product. People want to be just like the stars and if they see someone they relate to then they are more likely to buy that product

  13. I think where LeBron James plays will have an affect on his endorsement opportunities because if the team is not as good they won't go as far in the post season when most people watch. Not many companies will want to endorse someone who does get that much t.v. time. The article is interesting because i never knew that athletes make so much money off endorsements. Lebron will make money no matter where he goes, but the better the team does, the more money Lebron makes.
I think some athletes or entertainers are more marketable than others because they act respectful off the field or court and they winning athletes. I feel that consumers really pay more attention to products that are associated with a celebrity endorsor because they already love the player so it's easy to love the product. Endorsement deal is a win, win because the endorsor is getting big money and the company is getting great product association and is a way of selling.

  14. In my opinion, Lebron's location will effect his endorsements. I personally feel that he will gain more amounts of endorsements if he plays in a high profile city like NY or Chicago. I feel that if he goes to Chicago that will drive the entire NBA wild. I also feel like if he stays in Cleveland the weight on his shoulders will remain too great. I feel if he stays in Cleveland he'll lose endorsements but if he leaves he'll get more.
Certain athletes are made for the spotlight. Certain individuals have a personality that attracts the media and endorsements. I do believe that those who buy products let who its endorsed by play a great role. I feel that a product endorsed by Lebron is way more likely to be purchased than a product endorsed by "Joe Blow" in the European League.
