Bad Play, Free Ticket Is Marketing Ploy Of Future
by Darren Rovel, CNBC Sports Reporter
After a bad loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Seattle Sounders said they’d refund their season ticket holders for the game because of how poorly the team played.
The idea reportedly came from a player, Steve Zakuani, who said that the fans shouldn’t have to pay. Remarkably, the Sounders soon announced that the game would in fact be refunded to the team’s 32,000 season ticket holders.

I don't think this is a very good idea. It may bring in more fans and make more fans willing to buy tickets. However, the team will lose a lot of money whenever the team loses if they refund everyone. The losses to the team would far outway the benefits of refunding when the team loses.
ReplyDeleteI think this sort of policy would work best in baseball. Their are tons of games so the teams would still make revenues from those. The biggest problem would just be for those teams that only win 20 or 30 games. Any team in any sport that tends to lose would be an awful place to do this. Baseball just has enough games that even after some losses the team could still make money from the wins.

i think this is really dumb because the money is kinda coming from the players pocket. no one should expect to get a refund just becausse theyre fave team sucks. if you dont want to risk wasting your money, then stay at home man. its as simple as that. dont come to the game, watch your team get spanked and then expect to get a refund. if i was the manager i would get the heck out my face. this is totaaly a ludacris idea.
ReplyDeletei think baseball because i dont really like baseball and they can get very boring at times. players could have a really bad game and not play thier best so the refund idea would be best for them.

i think that is good that they gave money back for playing so poor in their game against the los angelos galaxy. I think that is was good they did because the next time they play more people or fans might come to the games and watch for free if they play badly like they did against the los angelos galaxy.you will get a load of cash if you give a good game cause more people will be there to watch.
ReplyDeletei say football will have a good chance of pulling it off cause its all about money. cause there is alot of football fans out there. the football players might play even better if the refunds start to mess with there income.more people will buy tickets and have a chance of getting there money back or watching some good games.
I think this is a smart idea in a sense but I wouldn't support it. This is because a sports event is unpredictable and supposed to have an unknown result. Fans are going to watch what happens and are supposed to be in it for the fun of unpredictability not to watch them win in particular. You're are paying to watch a game that can go either way, you're not paying to have them win. The audience has to understand that there are days when poor performance occurs and that's just part of the game because not everyone is going to have a perject day where they win every single time.
ReplyDeleteI think the sport that this policy would work best with is baseball mostly because it's not a sport where a major percentage of unpredictability is involved. I think sports that have a lot of movement and a lot of things going on tend to be more exciting for the audience so a sport like football of soccer shouldn't be considered for this policy because the fans should be going to watch the excitement rather than a win or loss. Baseball is a more moderate sport so I think that the policy would work better with it.

I think it is a resonable guarantee. I would support an idea like this if i owned a sports team. I would not support the win insurance policy becuase if a team play so many games and they dont win a whole lot then you are in the hole a good ways. I would make a policy that guaranteed that the games would be close and competitive or i would refund the money but anything beyond that to me is insane.
ReplyDeleteI think this would work best for sports teams that have limited number of games. For instance maybe football becuase they play around 16 to 19 games a season. Most likely your team would end up around even, or not have to use your guarantee to much. But with a sport like baseball and you have 162 games a year and around 5 teams every year end up with a 60-102 record or something in that range, and the loses most likely are by a larger margin then the team would go out of business for lossing so much money. The sport that this would work best with is a highly competive sport with no clear dominatory team.
If i were a one of those fans i'd love this idea because they didnt come to watch their team play that bad they paid for a good game. I'd support it because i'd be mad if i paid to watch my team play horrible. What if thats the first game you can ever afford and that one game you go to your home town team plays horrible i'd be mad. If i was the owner i wouldnt be to happy how are you suppose to make money if you give refunds out.
ReplyDeletei dont think this policy would work with football, basketball, baseball, or hockey because they sell out most of the arena so if they would give refunds out they wouldnt make any money and what if your team juss sucks. so i think it would only work on american soccer
I think that this idea will benefit the customer and the sell which would be the team, because on one hand the team isn't losing that much money and on the other hand the customers are getting a guarantee that they will have a good time or have a great show at least. I also think that if i went to a game i would want something like this too because if my team losses i at least didn't waste my money on watching them lose. If i was the owner of a franchise, i would support this idea because it would make my customers and the fans of the team happy. I would put this rule even before we play one game, so the the customers can trust this tea and there outcome.
ReplyDeleteI think that the sports that this would best work for is football, because a lot of people want to go to football games, but they fell like if there team loses then they have wasted their money for nothing. Also the football teams will make a lot of money because more people will come to their games and watch them play.
I don't think this is a good idea at all. When you purchase season tickets your risking your own money to see a good game or not, that's on you to sacrafice your money. You know that the team isn't always gonna win so you should be prepared for some losses. Don't expect your money back, because no one can predict the future to be perfect so you are taking a big risk in doing so. Just because you were'nt expecting the team to lose you should get refund,no, they weren't expecting to lose either.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with the policy so I don't think it would work best with any sport.

I think that it is an okay type of guarantee, I mean, you see football teams doing horribly some games and all the fans leave with is dissapointment or anger, not a refunded ticket or a free ticket to another game. If I was the owner of a sports franchise, I would have to think about giving a free ticket or credit to another season or game before just doing it, because if the team has one bad night, the fans should come back anyways, not gripe over wanting their money back, true fans don't mind one loss.
ReplyDeleteI think this policy would be best with baseball, but only under certain circumstances. If this team is a popular team for pride but not necesarily for their skills, then maybe they shouldn't have credits or refunds every loss, it could result in financial problems for the team company.
i think this is a great idea. If i was the manager i would do this as well. It encourages people to become season ticket holders. It also pretty much guarantees that you will pay to see a good game. Theres nothing worse than paying a lot of money to go and see a terrible game.
ReplyDeleteI think this sport works best for soccer because in the US every other sport is huge. There would be too much money to give back to season ticket holders. It wouldnt work for the NBA or MLB because there are so many games which would mean a lot more chances for there to be a bad game. MLS doesnt have as large a fan base as the NBA MLB NFL or NHL does. This is why it would work best for soccer.

I think this is a ridiculous idea. To refund tickets to fans means that you have just played a game in which you made nothing, but payed your players a lot. Other than concessions, there is no revenue coming in. As an owner, I would never implement this on my franchise. Too much money is lost, and there are other ways to draw in crowds without giving them free games.
ReplyDeleteI think this promtotion would work best with baseball. There are so many games in a season that refunding some tickets on a few games wouldn't have the worst impact on yearly profit. It still seems to be a silly idea, and there are definitely better ways to get fans. What most likely wouldn't work would be using this in soccer or football, as they play fewer games and theres not as much time to make up lost money.
There is not a gaurantee. There's an insurance that says a team will try to win, but if they don't, then spectators will get their money back for the ticket. I don't believe that this is necessary. The fact that a team has an insurance shows that it needs some type of protection. It is kind of like them thinking they are never going undefeated, which is the wrong attitude in sports. I would not support this idea. I believe if a team performs poorly, they should apologize to their fans by winning better than they lost. So if they lost 0-4, then they should win their next game 5-0 or more. I would believe in my franchise to win every game that could be played.
ReplyDeleteI think this policy would work best in baseball because baseball has a lot of games. It's also a terrible spectator sport so the fans would deserve there money back even more. It is also a long game so if the team performs poorly for a long period of time, the spectators deserve reinbursment even more. It would also work well with baseball because baseball franchises have a lot of money for with no necessities to spend it on. So using it to please the fans would be the best decision.

I think the idea of giving refunds to the ticketholders is a bad idea. The reason i think its a idea is because not every game is predictable especially with soccer because a team doesnt make many goals and its very heart stopping when a team makes a goal. If i were to give refunds for a team that is not very good i would never have that policy. People are just getting a free entry to a game. Even if i was supporting a team that lost that day i would still say it was a good game, if i had fun thats all that matters. Not every team is going to win every game.
ReplyDeleteI think this policy would work best with basketball because there is always constant excitement. They're always making shots and in soccer there would usually be a score of 1-0 and to say the players want to give a refund for all their hard work doesnt seem right. It would be ok to give refunds to local people because they support their home team.

My general thoughts on this type of guarantee is I dont think its a very good idea to sell free tickets because it ends up being a bad game. I mean yes fans will probably show up to more games, and you'll get more fans, but a business is whats best for customers needs and wants. It also has to do with the money making process. So, if they succeed with this plan, in the end it may not work. If I was the owner of a sports franchise, I would not support this idea because it will make our company make less money.
ReplyDeleteThe sport that I think best fits with this particuarly idea is probably basketball. The policy fits basketball because of the fans that go to a game that ends up losing some fans might be upset about the game. For an example, if its a Lakers & Spurs game, & one ends up losing then fans might want their money back. So, this free ticket think is soo not a good idea.
