Block 1: Sports & Entertainment Marketing Blog Entry # 3 (25 points)

Marketers that have already signed on as sports league sponsors in the real world would be wise to sign on in the virtual world as well.


According to the ESPN Sports Poll, conducted by TNS and Electronic Arts, more than a third of sports video game players say they spend as much or more time playing the game than they do following the same sport on television. Among these players, 75% of them said the in-game advertising helped reinforce the company's real world sponsorship.

  1. Most of the people I know play video games. When we play video games together it is normally sports video games because they are the best multiplayer games. My favorite games are NHL 10, FIFA 10, NBA 2K10, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Different games are popular with different people but the sports games always do well. I think that video games can be a good place to advertise. I have seen it in many of the sports games and if people spend their time playing games, why not spend your money advertising in them?

    The article was right. Playing sports video games raises sports knowledge. I have noticed a company presence in a video game many times before so yes, I do think their efforts are effective. It is just another way for a company to reach potential customers. Companies will always think of new, creative ideas to reach people.

  2. The gaming world has a lot of sports games. For sports gaming i think its for all ages because I've seen older people play a lot of sports games and they enjoy it. This shows that sports influence people in all ages and in the gaming world. Football games are the most popular in my opinion because the Madden franchise has been making the most money.

    I do play a lot of sports games because they have a lot it really similar to the real game. The article said they sports game are taking over the gaming community because its for all ages. The article was saying that the gaming company TNS is also becoming huge because they actually make the games for the consumers. The gaming in sports is huge in america and it is going to keep growing.

  3. The video game culture is mostly targeted towards preteens and teens, and sometimes adults. Anyone can play but it’s a majority of the time divided between the sexes because your most likely to see a male playing rather than a female. In the video game industry there will always be sales, because although its also targeted towards adults and older teens, kids will always find means to play video games. Now that our generation is more prone to technology and its concept, video games will always be in demand.

    The article discusses how avid sport gamers are mostly likely to be aware of the sponsor of the actual sport they play. So in a sense if advertising was allowed in gaming products then it would reach a bigger and better perspective of actual fans and gamers, targeting both for the price of one. This helps the company of both the sport, sponsor, and the game. The gamers would probably be more interested in the sport game rather then the ad on the screen that pops up. But gamers are more likely to play the game over and over again, so the ad will continuously pop up over and over again. This incorporates into the minds of the gamers and help them remember who helps sponsor their favorite video game sport as well as in real life.

  4. The video gaming world is very big, especially sports. People of all ages and diffrent backgrounds play video games, it is very popular in the U.S. Gmaes like Madden, Fifa,Call of Duty, NBA2K10, RockBand and many others are widely played by the gaming community. I feel it is a good idea for corporations to haave their priducts in games because then they get more advertising and publicity. I know gamers pay attention because I myslkef play games and notice them all the time.

  5. Video games seem to be a growing "epidemic" in the United States. WHere it used to be just children and teeens playing, there are now adult gamers who are even more obsessed with video games then the american youth has been. I dont play but all of my friends do and whenever we are at eachother's houses SOMEONE is playing Madden or FIfa. The video game industry is definitely somewhere where companies can do well. Even advertising groups can really get their message out there just by placing it in the opening of a video game.

    I think it is very interesting how people place their products into games. THere are many games that the consumer witnesses subtle messages throughout the game itself. For example in Need for Speed, you may see a billboard with CocaCola on it. OR maybe in Madden you see banners with various products around the arena itself. I think that the consumer/ gamer may not always notice these banners but many do. Before this assignment, I had never even thought about advertising within a game but now that the topic was brought up, I can go back and remember advertising from certain games that I may not have noticed before.

  6. The video gaming culture in todays world is pretty popular. A varitey of people play video games, not just 'gamers'. I think some of the most popular video games have to be Madden, Call of Duty, Modern Warfare, Rock Band, and other sports games. I myself barely play because I really don't have the time with school work and sports. I think the video game industry is a place where a company can do well because they can make their name more popular.

    I don;t really like this article that much because when they talked about an 'avid fan' they didn't really explain what an avid player consists of. I do agree however that corporations being advertised in video games can help somewhat. For example, seeing nike on one of your favorite sports player might make that video gamer have more of a want for that product. I also think that sometimes the advertisements are just ignored completely.

  7. The video gaming culture includes a variety of different games that a customer can choose from. In my opinion, the majority of people who play video games are males that vary from different age ranges. Most of the video gamers play games sports related or action packed . I've noticed most of the video games that are featured in commercials are EA Sports games whether it is for the NFL or NBA. I don't play video games because I just don't find them very interesting and rather play the sport in real life rather than on a television screen. But, the Wii games have been very successful because they include a variety of games that gain many consumers interests, including myself. I believe that the video game industry is a great place where companies can do well because the avid video gamers notice the different sponsorships. But,this depends on the type of company that is going to be featured in the game. If that company doeswn't really attract the attention of that demographic of people then it won't be as successful.

    In the article it stated how 75% of video game players think the in-game advertising helped reinforce the company's real world sponsorship. This is very impressive and also good news to companies because that lets them know that their company is being noticed. I don't really care whether or not corporations have an advertisement present in video games because I do not play video games on a day to day basis. I do think there are a lot of gamers who pay attention especially, the younger players, who are easily influenced by the media. But, there are also teens and adults who play video games who can actually physically go out and get the company's product themself. All in all, I believe that the concept of featuring advertisements in the games are benefiting comapanies and not hindering them.

  8. Video games are a huge part of our culture both in the sports and entertainment world. The more popular video games today are the COD series, madden, and Fifa. I choose not to play these video games because there are various other things i'd rather be doing. I do however play tony hawk video games, and MLB games on a regular basis because i gain. far more enjoyment out of them .

    I feel like some gamers do pay attention to advertising within the games. Those who are atheletes are far more inclined to purchase certain products that are advertised in the games they play. I also feel like those who don't play sports are too engulfed in the video game itself to notice let alone care about any advertisements within the games.

  9. Playing video games has always had an increase over the years. I know people my own age as well as very younger and much older who play video games on a dailty basis. I see most of my friends play COD(call of duty) and other video games. If and when i play video games, i tend to stick with racing games or life style games. I'm not one for and of the sprot games. I believe the video game compamies can do very well in this industry because they are able to get people more involved in their game which believe itor not, allows them to capture more knowledge about the product itself.
    Advertising their games is being very effective. I've seen multiple advertisements. I do believe the gamers are well aware of the advertisements that are being viewed. i've noticed them, so im sure other have too. Whether or not it is increasing the game play specifically for that reason is unknown. however, i strongly believe that gamers who own a certain game, would much rather bve playing the game then watch an advertisment on the TV.

  10. just about everyone at some point plays a video game, from little kids to senior citizens playing on the wii. the video game industry has such a large varity of types of games, that suit anyones favorte type to play. i have a xbox 360 and a psp. i play them well never. maybe once every few months. some games i own are MLB Football and Nascar. so yes i did buy the games of my favorite sports.
    i have seen advertising in the games. and i agree with it. as long as it does not create a long opening to the video game like on some videos on the internet. when a sport is on tv its only on for a few hours. a video game people are playing all the time anytime, anywhere they want. exposing them to the advertising constantly.

  11. Video games is where people play or challenging other people. People who loves the video game industries play video games every night. The top selling game systems are xbox and wii. The games that are popular now is madden and nba. Sometimes when I am home I play games but not on a regular basis because it gets boring.
    In the article it said that most of sports fans play video games more than watching a real game on t.v. Some sponsors believe that if they are signing with the nfl (real world) then they should sign with virtual world as well. I believe that they should have advertising in the game industries because there is a large population who are buying games. Some gamers will pay attention to the advertising on the game. The people who are going to advertising should put it in the cover of the game.

  12. The video game culture consists of people not only in the United States but in the whole world as well. Mostly teenagers to young adults play but it is not limited to them as it ranges to many other ages. I do not play video games because it is expensive to be buying games and i do not have time because I am always busy with soccer.Yes the video game industry is the place to do well but creativity and imagination is needed. Your video game also has to be appealing to the public.
    The article talks about how the gaming industry searches for sponsors now not only from sports but from gamers. The rate of fans rose since a few years back. Fans on average follow six to eight different sports. Gamers spend equal amount of time on video as they do in watching sports.

  13. Mostly teenagers play video games, but some adult also play for the thrill of it. Also, I see more men and boys playing game rather than girls and women. Madden, NBA, FIFA, and Call of Duty video games are popular because the most people who play games play these ones, and give these games a high rating. I do play video games with my friends because it’s fun for the competition. It’s something to do when you’re bored. The video game industry is a place where a company can do well because people love to play the game and become addicted to it. Then the company puts ads in the video games and more people will start to know that company’s name.

    Corporations have an advertising presence in video games and people don’t really mind it because it doesn’t really affect the video game itself. Video gamers don’t pay attention on purpose. For example when the game is loading it could show a Coke Cola bottle and they see the bottle but don’t really pay any attention to it. Then the next time the gamer is at the store think weather to purchase Coke or Pepsi, their mind will say Coke. Overall the little advertisements may be annoying, but it’s effective.

  14. In the video game industry now a days you can't count anyone out. Everyone plays video games but the true video gamers are also the people that do extra for the sport they love. The most famous sports games out right now are any game that ends in 2k. The only game I play on my xbox is NBA2k10. Im also a huge NBA fan and a huge basketball player. I believe the video game industry is the place to sell, because everyone does it all across the world.

    I believe that advertising your product in a video game is a brillant idea. Im not that much of a gamer but I do notice some of the advertising on the game. So, if I recognize the product then I know that the true gamers recognize it. This gamers now a days study the game and there are a lot of pro gamers in this world.

  15. I know a lot of people who play sports video games and watch it for the love of the sport. People play the game because they like to test their skills against one another. Video games are more fun to play with because you actually get to control the player instead of watching him mess up in the game. I play a little bit of sport games but the main games I play are shooting and fighting games mixed with an adventure. I love sports but I jus don't play the game. I play it every now and then.

    I think playing sport games expands the knowledge of the sport. It is a great way to advertise for people our age. Everybody plays sport game to keep up with the things going on in that sport. They also making the sport games realistic watch also a big reason why teens play sport games.

  16. The video gaming adventure is amazing. It is really fun and you can play with other kids online. A kid from the age 8-25 is the range of the age that people play video games. I think the most popular game for gaming systems is COD MW2. It’s exciting and very fun. Yes I play a lot. If I could play all day I would. My Xbox 360 is my favorite possession and it makes me feel happy when imp sad.

    Advertising video games is a great idea. So many kids play all the time, especially on Xbox live. Do I think kids will pay attention no. They are to focused on getting ready to play the game. Plus I think kids would just try to skip the commercials.

The video game culture is more advanced than ever before.With consoles like the Playstation 3 and xbox 360, video gamers are now experiencing the most advanced realistic football,basketball,soccer,golf, and driving games in generations. The really avid gamers are the ones that are true fans of their sport or a video game. As an avid soccer fan, its been a tradition for me to get the latest fifa games by EA Sports. I believe that the video game industry is the perfect way for a company to promote their product.
    The gaming industry is a great way to ingrain corporations and their products into video gamers. Its a very good way to target the young age group because they are always playing and always waiting for the next video game to come out. I believe that video gamers aren't paying attention to the sponsors as much as they are on the actual game. However, the presence of corporations is a great idea,because they will benefit from all they're promoting. The most successful corporations are the ones that target the avid fans!

  18. The video game culture is a bunch of guys who have nothing else to do so they sit on the couch and play video games. Guys are the ones that usually play. Not many women play. It is popular because guys are living their lives though the players. They wish they could be them. I do not play because it seems silly to just sit around inside all day and play. Id rather go outside and play or just do other things in general. I do believe the video game industry does benefit from the companies putting advertisements in the game. The video game get money for having the companies sponsor the game and the sponsors get promotion and people will recognize the company outside of the game. I think its a good thing that companies have advertisements in the game because the people who play it want a realistic game and if there wasn't ads then it wouldn't be real. There are advertisements at the real deal sporting events. I do think gamers pay attention. They know the different companies that sponsor stuff in the games and in real life.
