Can’t get enough of “Avatar”? James Cameron thinks so, hence the director is planning to re-release the film this summer. Reports said Cameron and 20th Century Fox officials are planning to re-release “Avatar” in mostly Imax theaters. Not only that, Cameron is reportedly also considering adding scenes that did not make the final cut.
“Avatar” had the monopoly of the Imax theaters for about three months since it was released but saw its take dwindle when Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” opened on March 5. Cameron had said earlier that he has up to 40 minutes of additional materials that can be easily included to a theatrical reissue or DVD release of “Avatar.” However, the director would probably limit additional scenes to about ten minutes in order to keep “Avatar” within the 170-minute limit for a movie to be shown in analog Imax theaters. The original version of “Avatar” is 160 minutes long.
“Avatar” has grossed $ 712.5 million domestically, while international earnings has reached $ 1.9 billion as of March 4. A 2D version of the film is expected to be released as early as next month while a 3D version on Blu-ray disc could come in fall.
In a 2 paragraph response (a minimum of 5 sentences for each paragraph), answer the following questions. In paragraph # 1, give your thoughts about Avatar coming back to the theatres this summer. Have people had enough? Why or why not? Do you feel that adding another 40 minutes to an already 160 minute film is to much? Why or why not? In paragraph # 2, discuss the marketing activities that you have seen for Avatar. From what you have seen, what do you think is the most effective. Use your knowledge of the 5 P's and the 9 functions of marketing to address this question.

i dont think the movie avatr was that good enough to be re-released or realesed twice. i have never seen the movie but i cant imagine it being that good that it needs to be seen twice. i dont think they are going to make a big profit like the 1st release becuase i think its just a lot of cool effects.
ReplyDeletei havent seen alot of advertisements alot for the re release because i dont think its going to be a good idea. it can be a bad time and place to re release. i hope they take alot of comments and veiws of the people and customers seriously before re-releasing it again. if they dont this could a catastrophic event for the marketing team assigned to this project. i wouldnt see it again if it was released. if people want to see it so bad why dont they just go see it again?

I think that they should not re realease Avatar in theaters again. The movie was really good but it was also very long. I think people already had enough of the Avatar because it has been in theaters since Decemeber. I think if they add 40 minutes, it will bore the audience. If they have already seen it then they wouldn't want to wait and watch 40 minutes they've never seen.
ReplyDeleteMarketing is a big issue when Avatar came out. There were a lot of ways to get it across the world. They had great ads for it and they proted it with contest. They also had slurpee cups at 7-11 for it. This targeted customers which attracted them to see the film.
I think that Avatar coming back to the theatres this summer is alright, it hasn't really affected me because I have yet to go to the movies to see it. Since a majority of my friends have seen it and claim that it is "SOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD!" I guess that people want more. I feel that adding another 40 minutes to a movie that is already almost three hours long may be a bit much, but if the fans want it and are willing to pay and sit through it, then let them have their cake and eat it too. But, this is also why you have DVD's and add the 40 mintues as bonus features, so it's not all at once, I know I'd want a stretch break without missing something.
ReplyDeleteI have seen a lot of ads and hype for Avatar, but nothing particularly striking to me personally. But, since it has beaten Titanic's record, then it is clearly effective; I just may not enjoy the previews. I think that from one person seeing it and spreading it by word of mouth it has become really popular, because people keep going to see it again and again. It's all about promotion, and it has been promoted well. Recently, on the Academy Awards, Ben Stiller was dressed up in an Avatar costume, promoting the movie (although he was talking about the best makeup category..), it gave the movie even more publicity.
Avatar was a pretty good movie. Everyone was saying it was so cool, so i decided to go watch it and i was pretty impressed with the effects of the people and settings. If the movie is going back in the theatres this summer, the movie must have been really good because people sometmes get tired of movies. I think Avatar was a one time thing because it was long and original. I think they should give some time first because its way to soon, they should have the fans miss the movie first.
ReplyDeleteWhen the movie came out in i think late December there were lots of promotion on the movie. Some friends mentioned it to me before i even seen the advertisements. I dont think the movie really needed many ads out there because it would have seemed like people were hyping it because i think the movie backed it up.

I don't a lot of people have had enough of Avatar. I know that I liked it and I would go see it again. It was a good movie and enough people liked it that I think it would have success being rereleased. I think that adding another 40 minutes would be way to much though. A 3 hour 20 minute movie is just too long. The 2 hours 40 minutes it already is, is really too long. That is a lot of time out of the day and its hard to stay focused for that long.
ReplyDeleteI really haven't seen a whole lot for Avatar outside of commercials and a few billboard type advertisements. I remember before the movie came out there were a ton of commercials in it and there were sneak peaks on other shows. I thought the sneak peak type advertisements were extremly affective. After I saw it, I really wanted to go see the movie and that was well before the actual release. That sort of advertising would be inneffective in a rerelease though. I think just making sure people know of the rerelease is the best way to advertise it, since the same people will probably be going both times.

I havent seen the movie Avatar. My thoughtts of Acatar coming back to the theatres in the summer is I think it's a good idea. People seem to enjoy the movie, even with the fact that the movie is 160 minutes long. I don't think all people have had enough but maybe some people have had enough. Personally, I think that adding 40 minutes to an already 160 minute is a bit to much because it just makes it longer think of your target market, such as ages. Have to think about how late can they be out to watch such a movie so long. I like the idea of the 2D to 3D version thought. Maybe I will attented the one coming in the summer or by the disc in the fall.
ReplyDeleteI havent really seen any marketing activities for Avatar. The price seems to be fair for going to attented watching this movie. The promotion havent seen much besides the advertisting event on television, to tell about the movie coming out or now playing. I think they might have a new Avatar video game out or coming, not 100% sure though.

I think that Avatar re-releasing is a bit odd but then again considering that people have said it's a good movie, it might be worth it. Some people might have had enough, but if the movie is that good, then often times people wouldn't mind watching it over again especially if there are going to be things added. It might be too much to add forty more minutes to a movie but I feel like if it were that good of a movie, I would watch not considering how long it is. People can watch tv for five hours straight although it's not the same show the whole time. It really depends on the audience, if the people can handle sitting down that long then perhaps it may be worth it but if not, then you might lose the interest of the viewers. Adding another ten to twenty minutes wouldn't feel much different but I get the feeling that even forty minutes more wouldn't feel like forty minutes more because you'd be really into the movie. Often times people won't keep track of the time while they watch a movie unless they have some to do that day. If it's just a 'go out and watch a movie' kind of day then, often times people will not notice that it's a really long movie.
ReplyDeleteI think the most effective marketing technique was the commercials. If I had not seen the thousands of commercials on tv then I probably wouldn't have heard aboout it. The commercial also makes the movie look really cool and interesting. It gives a glimpse of the special effects and plot line of the story so it draws the person in. From what I experienced, if the commercial is interesting I will want to watch it. The fact that the movie was shown in almost every theater the first time made it so that anyone could see it. The movie seemed to try to aim at a large audience or everyone, although maybe not the younger kids. The movie seems to appeal to everyone though, whether they are sci-fi fans or not.

i dont think that they should re-release it because i dont think there is anything they can do to the movie for them to put it back out there. plus the movie wasnt all that. i think people did have enough of the movie because when it came out and everybody went to go see it i didnt hear much about it. i think it depends on what they add on to the movie because nobody wants to watch the whole movie over again just to see 40 mins of the end.
ReplyDeletethere was alot of marketing they have tried to post it across the world like ads and commercials.the way they try to explain whats going on and the main plot of the movie. they porbably did alot of product planning to how they are going to put the movie out there.

I dont see this movie coming out again and being a huge hit again. People may have seen it once or twice or even 3 times but paying again to watch a movie you have already seen just is not smart. I garauntee that people have already planned on buying the dvd. You see a movie once and really enjoy it, you will buy it on dvd to watch it next time you want to. I think adding another 40 minutes makes it seem like money is the only important thing. It shows desperatey for more money. This is dumb, just make the dvd have 2 versions, extended and normal. I mean, if you wanted to promote the movie more before the dvd came out, and you're stuck on re-release, then put it out for a special weekend, and have the ticket be half off or something.
ReplyDeleteI used to see Avatar commercials on TV but I don't see them anymore. They should definetly show some to promote the dvd (and the recently added extended version). I think that the people that have seen it, talked to their friends about it. Word of mouth is the most marketing i've seen from this movie. Commercials here and there. The price of tickets is not controlled by the movie, its agreed upon with the theater. Ticket prices will always be high. This movie is great, so it deserves to be promoted better, and no movie should ever re-release after being at the top, because there's only one way to go. Down.

I think that by re-releasing the movie the director is kind of showing off his movie and saying that it is better then other movies. I think that people have had enough and they will obviously make less money then they did the first time. I think that adding another 40 minutes is not alot because it was a good movie so the extra 40 minutes will help it out. In my opinion 200 mintutes is not alot of time and some other movies were as long as that.
ReplyDeleteSome marketing activites that avatar has done is advertising on tv and advertising in the movies too. I think that most effective is word of mouth because people that go watch the movie tell their friends and family, who then tell their friends and family. For people, then polpe tell use word of mouth. for, place the producers put the movies everywhere so they can make alot of money. For product, the movie was great and alot of people liked it. For price, the movie was more expensive then other movies but i think that it was worth it.

I dont see much of a point in rereleasing the movie avatar. I think that it would be better if they are going to add material just to add it to the dvd and blue ray versions. I dont think that people will want to return to theaters to see the same movie again. I dont think it will bring in as much revenue as they expect.
ReplyDeleteI think that if they are going to add the extra film into the movie that they should just let it be part of the dvd and blue ray. If they do rerelease it i dont think people are going to go pay 13 or 14 bucks to see the movie again. I think that it would sell better if they made it part of a special feature that comes with a dvd becuase i wouldnt pay to see the same movie twice.
I think the bringing back Avatar to theaters and the Imax screen on a re-release is a risky move. This could be very successful with avid Avatar fans dying to see the new footage, or it could be a summer bust and cost more money to produce than it brings in sales. I remember seeing Avatar in 3D but not Imax, it was very good but seemed a bit tedious at points. I think that the extra scenes described were unnessecary and don't add much to the plot. I feel like this idea is overall bad, but maybe I just don't know as much as James Cameron.
ReplyDeleteI actually didn't see as much promotion for the movie Avatar as one would expect for such a big-time film. A lot of the hype was that this was James Cameron's first movie since his filmography domination with Titanic, so it must be good. As far as ads, I probably saw the Avatar commercial about 4 times on televison before the movie was released. I did go online and watch all the trailers however. I think what James Cameron should do is just release all the additional footage on the DVD and advertise that to increase DVD sales.
The re-release of "Avatar" this summer would be a great opportunity for the movie to become even bigger than it already was. The movie itself set records, people watched the movie over two times while it was out, its no surprise that people haven't had enough. I think that "Avatar" supporters would love the idea of the added scene and would be willing to go back and pay to watch the movie again. Adding 40 minutes to the movie would most likely bring in more supporters of the film rather than 10 minutes. I believe that "Avatar" will continue to break records during the summer.
ReplyDelete"Avatar" has targeted all age groups all over the world. The records they broke say it all, you can't break records that way without targeting the majority of the public. I think that "Avatar" set their prices affortable for everyone, even with its 3D effects. The movie 3D effects also help bring the younger age groups who help bring their parents and from their its just a big chain that is pulling in movie. The movie's theme can be found anywhere and anybody can relate to it and thats part of the reason why it sold so well internationally.
I don't think the new movie coming out will make as much money at all. Exspecially if it's longer because people who have already seen it will already know whats gonna happen and then a longer movie will make people fall asleep. They should just leave it the way it is, cuz if its not broken then dont fix it.
ReplyDeleteThe marketing for the first release of avatar was remarkable. I dont think the second will do too well. Many people have already seen it, and unless they were inlove with the first one most people are not down for a second avatar.
I think people have had enough. Avatar was a great movie and it had a great run but i think its tim ein theaters should be done. It was already a very long movie and i dont think people would sit through another 40 minutes. I think it was also a very good well rounded movie that doesnt need any additions.
ReplyDeleteAvatar was a very marketable movie. Everywhere you looked it was avatar avatar avatar. It was on tv commercials, mcdonalds and 7-11 merchandise. People were constantly talking about it and there was tremendous buzz around it. I think mcdonalds was the best marketing campaign because everyone sees or eats mcdonalds on a daily basis
counts
i dont think they should rerun the movie because it coudnt have been that good. ive personally never seen it but i heard from friends it was good but not that good to be rerun again in the summer they should juss put the DVD out.
ReplyDeleteWhen Avator was coming out for the first time it was the hype every commercial on tv would be about avator but know i dont see any avator commercials so if theyre trying to make it big again they better hurry up with those advertisements and mcdonalds toys.
Avatar was a vicious movie, so I think that the decision to re-release the movie is a good one! I know that alot of people who have already seen the movie(including myself) will want to see it again, not to mention the rush of people who HAVEN'T seen the movie is going to be enormous. I believe everybody should see the film that crushed the hype of The Titanic.
ReplyDeleteI haven't really seen any "marketing activities" for the movie Avatar, nor am I entitely sure what a marketing activity is, but for the producers to release the movie in 2D, 3D AND Imax they are definitly playing to the tastes of the customer. All in all I think no matter what they decide to do for the movie they are going to get huge, ground-breaking numbers.

Avatar was a really good movie. I wouldnt mind watching it a couple more times. Avatar coming back to the thetre in the summer might not be as successfull as when it first came out. Unless the extra time they add on the movie is like really amazing, then i doubt they would be as popular as the first time. They would have too get peoples attention really good by promting it very well through comercials, and etc... Some people may have had enough of the movie, especially the ones that have seen it a billion times.
ReplyDeleteThey were used very good before it came out the first time. They advertized it by having big posters on stores, having adds on the slurpy cup. This summer they might come out with some creative idea since its summer.

I think that bringing avatar back into theaters this summer is a bad idea. Most people will probably be over the movie by then because they will have moved on to something better. I think that adding 40 minutes to the movie is also a bad idea because after a while if the movie is too long people start to get bored of it and stop paying attention. Extending the movie with scenes that weren't in the movie could change the movie for people and cause them to not like it as much as the original. If people start to go see it and tell their friends it's not as good, the second version won't make as money as the first. I think that if they bring back the movie this summer or extend the time it will cause Avatar to lose it's good reputation.
ReplyDeleteI've seen commercials and ads in magazines for the Movie avatar. I think this strategy is effective because most of the world or United States is watching TV or reading magazines. I also saw avatar marketed in fast food restaurants as well. Having it in fast food places is a good idea because most of the United States also eats fast food on a weekly basis. I think that the entertainment industry tried to mainly point the movie towards young adults or other adults instead of children.
