Block 2: Sports & Entertainment Marketing Blog Entry # 3 (25 points)

Marketers that have already signed on as sports league sponsors in the real world would be wise to sign on in the virtual world as well.
According to the ESPN Sports Poll, conducted by TNS and Electronic Arts, more than a third of sports video game players say they spend as much or more time playing the game than they do following the same sport on television. Among these players, 75% of them said the in-game advertising helped reinforce the company's real world sponsorship.

  1. Its the avid sports fans that mostly by video games of there sport. The NFL, NBA, NHL, and top golf are the most popular games. Somtimes i will play NHL. I like that game because its a fun game to play. I think video games are a very good way to get customers. If somebody gets a vidoe game and doesnt watch the sport they will still find a favorite team and when they do they will want to watch them on tv.
    I think that companys making video games on sports is a good thing. It can help people figure out how the sport works. Then there are also trading deals in the games. Which i think they are pretty realistic.

  2. People that play the videogames are often people that are fans of that sport. Not always though, because in some cases the videogane is just fun. Madden is a big game. I play some games just because they are fun to play. It's fun to play as one of your favorite players as well. So many people play videogames that it is definitly a great place to advertise.

    I think it is a really good idea for companies to advertise within videogames because it would get a huge audience. I don't know if the gamers really notice the sponsors. They might notice them unconsiously. I think its kind of cool when you see the sponsors on the sides of the stadiums because it adds to the realism. I never really notice which sponsors are which though.

  3. pretty much every kid plays video games. Adults play alot too, sometimes too much but thats a different story. Sports games are really important like nba and madden but i think the most popular game is call of duty modern warfare 2. Everyone i know owns the game and plays it religiously. I play sometimes but not alot and it advertising does catch your eye and make you think about the project.
    Snickers had a huge sponsorship deal this year with madden. The name was all over the place. It caught your eye and made you hungry and want a snickers. I think marketing on video games does work. It could easily help your business because it will reach a wide audience. It definitely cant hurt your business

  4. People that play video games, are poeple that like video games. I think fist person shooters are popular because there were two new first person shooters that came out in the last two weeks. Yes i play because they are good games. I dont like playing sports games because, i would rather play them in real life then to play them in a video game. In my opinion i think a company could make alot of money in the video game industry because alot of poeple play video games. For example over 5 million people bought the new game Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 in
    November of 2009, because it was a sequel of Modern Warfare 1 and that was an amazing game.

    I think having advertising in Video games is annoying if it is in console video cames like ps3 and Xbox360. I think that gamers would not pay attention to the advertising because it is annoying. Also they take up time and when you are playing you want as much time as you can get.

  5. alot of people play video games. it is one of the best ways to get new customers and a bigger fan base.I play games all the time. one of my favorite games are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and the GTA series and others. i think the video game industry is a great place for companies to thrive because it shows how creatvive a compnay can get. Corporations are great to be in games because fake or generic brands are wack. i think gamers pay atteniton because it makes it more realistic.

  6. Video gamers are often played by fans and nonfans of the subject of interest. If the video game is about sports, it'll interest those who play sports more but also those who watch it in general. I don't play video games much. Mostly because there's a lack of interest in it. The gaming industry is a place where a company can do well because it's considered a past-time or a hobby by many people. Through gaming you reach different kinds of people, not just one group.
    I think advertising through a game is useful and many times a different advertising technique. Not all gamers will notice though. Some will just brush it off as a hinderence because they want to play the game and not pay attention to the purpose of the advertisement. But often times the gamer will recognize the company as they see it over and over again even if they don't like the advertising in the game or not. Some will notice though, but often times they will be too preoccupied with the game rather than what the advertisement is trying to say.

  7. People that play sports video games are usually people that play football, or soccer, or hockey. I think that it's who ever plays the sport, plays the sport on the video game. Madden 2010 is a really popular game that I know a lot of sports players play- especially football players. I don't play video games because I'm a girl, so I'm not really interested in that. Also, I don't really have time to sit around and play all day because of school and work. The video game industry is a place where a company can do well because not only teenagers, but adults are playing video games all around the world. So, your company becomes well known because millions of people see it everyday.

    I think that companies having advertising presence in video games is a good idea because a lot of people will see their advertisement when they turn on their game system. But I also think it's not really necessary because a lot of people get annoyed of seeing advertisements on television, so they don't want to see it on their video game too. I think that having it on the video game could sometimes annoy the gamer and cause them to not even want to use the companies product. I think that gamers do not pay attention most of the time because they're just focused on playing the game- not looking at advertisements. Also, most teenagers just don't care about advertisements at all.

  8. People who play sports or watch them play the sport video games. Popular games are Fifa, Madden, and NBA. I play Fifa the most because i like playing soccer. Its fun to play because you know what the sport is about and it looks cool when you can play as your favorite team you watch on TV. I think the gaming industry is good because it creates new fans and it keeps the sport popular.
    The video game industry is good because when your not outside playing the sport you can play on the video game. It gives you a cahnce to play 24/7. Gaming is good because its a guarantee they will get fans because everyone plays sports. I think people dont really pay attention to the advertisement because they get into the game because their interested and its mostly teens that play. ADAMS MIRANDA

  9. For sports related video games, many 'avid fans' partake in using their gaming consoles to play sports that they follow in their daily lives. A majority of the sport-gamers play a version of football, whether it is professional or college level. Sometimes, I play, but I mainly watch the sport rather than play it on my XBOX. But when I do, it is very fun. In my opinion, companies can do well to an extent through video games, because not all gamers will necesarily look at the products or company logos incorporated into the game or into the start up of the game, but when they do pay attention, they are getting their name out to many people, which will eventually increase popularity.
    The article clearly presents the differences between 'avid' fans and regular sports fans, and how companies logos will be noticed. In any video game, regardless of the type of game, there are always companies advertising, either being a sponsor of the sport, or just advertising themselves in the beginning of the game. I think most gamers do pay attention, but it will not always phase them, because most of the time they do not have a choice of avoiding the companies presence. But, also, some logos can be skipped by pressing a button to skip it. I think that they will mostly are focused on getting to playing the game, not the little company ads and logos intermixed.

  10. People play video games to do something that they can't do in real life. It's like you can mentally break the rules, but still be fine. Anybody can play a video game, but some rules are broken by some people, and other rules broken by other people. For example, in real life, there is physics, and gravity, but someone could play a game where they can jump 20 feet in the air. This can be mentally releasing. No rules. I play video games daily, except during the highschool soccer season. First Person Shooters (FPS) are very popular among all gamers, but every real athlete has their own sport in game form. I play because of the mentall release, and I like winning :). A company can do great in the gaming world, but it all depends on their product, or which product they support.
    I feel that corporations with their name in/on a video game would not make a difference to a consumer. I mean, I wouldn't go to Toys r us just because they have their name on a game I want/like. I'm loayal to what is good, aka: GameStop. I know gamers dont pay attention to sponsors of video games, we care about who makes the game. It really doesn't matter who financed the game, but it matters who makes it. Certain companies make good games, it attracts a true gamers attention.

  11. Today many people play video games. the majority of them are teenagers. There are a lot of different types of games now like racing and sports and action. The hottest new game is cod modern warfare 2. People stood in line to purchase this game the night it came out.
    Sponsors of major league sports already have many ways of advertising their product effectivley. Now that they are advertising in video games it makes the gaming experience that much more real. Even if the people that are not really intersested in that may particular sport may even now know the different sponsors. Now with all the technology and the sponsors advetising it makes the video game seem like it is happening in real time

I think everyone plays video games these days, but the true video gamers play everday i think the most popular video game today in eithier 2k10 or call of duty everybody plays those to games. if people are really into a certain sport their going to want to play the game to. Like im really into the NBA so i play nba 2k10 like everyday

  13. Playing video games is a daily routine for teens our age, mostly boys. It's very popular and it's a great way to expand your knowledge on learning how to play a new sport or to go more in depth on a sport your are already familiar with. Video games are time consuming because their so addictive so for a company this would be really good especially if they have numerous series of the game. The only video game I give my time to is Wii Fitness, while my brother can play for hours on Silent Hill 2.

    If their were to be an advertising section in video games I think alot of kids especially the younger ones will skip it. Or they will use that time as a bathrroom break or to run and get some food. It might be good to some other older kids who can actually watch it and say "Oh that game looks vicious Im gonna go buy it". Instead of a 6 year old trying to persuade his mom to buy the latest shooting game. It might be a good advertising deal, definitely something to test.

  14. Video games are very popular in the world today. At least every continent has or invented a video gaming system. Mostly people from eleven to twenty-four year old people play video games. It is very popular because of the variety of games and different genres. I like playing video game a lot. I like playing sport games and adventure games like Halo, COD MW 2, and many more. The video game company can do very well because of their profits they make when they sell games.

    In the article, it talks about video games and how it is popular throughout the world. It also talks about people who play sport games but they don't play the sport at all.

  15. Many people that play sports usually play the game as well. They play the game too because they understand the certain plays or routes that are being used. Some people choose not to play the sport because they are not good at it,but they play the video game because they like the sport so much thats the next big thing they could do besides playing it.

    Certain advertisment are catchy so once you turn on your video game you say the advertisment. For exmaple when it says ea sports its in the game everyone seems to like that so they say it as well. I like the advertisements because they are a good way to get teenagers attention.

  16. The video game industry is a lot like television in the sense of the effect it takes from advertising. I don't personally play video games because of the time they consume, but a large part of the population does play, especially targetable youth. A company looking to promote can certainly succeed in a video game, which is almost like a televison program. A business should pay a lot to put up a CGI bilboard in a popular game like Madden or Call of Duty as oppose to maybe a cheap ad in a low-selling game. Target marketing is also key, like if Dicks Sporting Goods has an ad on the sideline of and NBA 2K10 game it would reach the type of people who might go to that store.

    The key information provided in this article are the numbers. Only about a third of the general population is an avid NFL fan, while 55% of sports gamers are. This means that advertising in a game could reach around 20% more people who would notice it as opposed to televison. For this reason, video game advertising could overtake ads on tv because it will reach a more product-specific audience. This is why target marketing is key, Disney Channel wouldn't want to put an ad in Resident Evil.

  17. The video game culture is worldwide. The avid fans play the games mostly ages 8-24. The most popular video games are: NFL,NBA,and NCAA. Yes, I enjoy playing the NFL and NBA game. It's very interesting to me to be involved in the game while playing with a friend.

    I think the video game industry can do well because alot of people in the world today love the games as entertainment. I feel about the corporations having advertising presence in video games it is a good idea. I dont think gamers pay attention, because their most focus on the game itself.

  18. the age range of people who play video games is like 8-30 years old. probably the most popular games are sports games and call of duty. i dont play much video games, only the call of duty and some nba games, other than that, i dont play. i'd say i dont play video games because i have too many important things going on, like work and starting a career, but some dont have to worry about that because they already have a family with money. but anyways, a company could really benefit from sports games, by placing logos and ads in them. by doing this its the same as if they were to put and ad or logo in a real life game.
    the way i feel about corporations advertising presence in video games is that it is a good way to make sales go up, but its not as serious as real life advertising. i think gamers dont really pay attention, but some might catch it and it might have an affect on them, but for the most part i think its a 50/50 chance. why? because when kids play video games theyre so focused on the game that the ad doesnt really catch their attention. but like i said, some older people might catch the ad and then make the decision in their head about if they want to check out the product thats being advertised.

  19. The Video game culture to me is for teenage boys and grown men who have no life. Online gaming has become popular as well as NBA and NFL branded games. I don't play because I choose to do better and more constructive things with my life.

    The article states the fact that most video games are avid NFL and NBA fans. Mostly avid fans are the ones that pay attention because they are avid and passionate they want to know everything that's going on in the world of the NBA and/or NFL and feel like they have hands on about what's going on. Corporations having a presence in advertising for sports isn't really a big deal.
